Another year has come and gone with Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard.

As with every credit card, it’s important to evaluate whether the card is worth keeping when the annual fee comes due (especially now during the pandemic).

Before making any “keep or cancel” decision, I’ve found it wise to call the credit card company to see if any retention offers were available.

The Call

I called Barclays customer service at the phone number on the back of the card. I quickly got a representative, told him I was trying to determine if I should keep the card with its $89 annual fee because the card’s benefits were “basically impossible” to use this year.

I asked him if there were perhaps any annual fee-waivers or retention offers available to me to help me make my $89 decision.

The Retention Offer

He said he understood my question, and asked me to hold while he searched my account for any available offers.

When he came back on the line, he said, “Sir, I’m sorry, there are no offers available to you at this time. But if you still do want to cancel, you’ll have 45 days from the day the annual fee was charged for a full refund”.

The Bottom-Line: My Retention Offer for The Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard

So, no retention offer in 2021. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed (or surprised).

Barclays – unlike Chase or American Express – has been exceedingly stingy with any kind of incentives to keep their credit cards in the hands of their customers.

The reality is, during the pandemic, the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard provided me almost no value other than giving me an easy way to my points “alive”. But there are other, cheaper ways to do that (such as donating miles).

As such, it looks like this card is headed for cancellation.

I’ll keep you updated if Barclays makes me an offer during the cancellation process, but as of now, I’m ready to say “aloha”.
