The Animas River Trail (ART) in Durango, Colorado is a shared-use path that stretches over 7 miles along the Animas River. This hard-surface trail serves as the heart of Durango’s trail system and acts as a vital transportation link for the local community. Running through the heart of the city, the trail provides easy access to various parks, open spaces, natural surface trails, and essential amenities such as the community recreation center, public library, downtown Durango, neighborhoods, and schools. Along its course, the ART crosses 8 bridges, 4 underpasses, and even a tunnel, allowing users to explore the city without having to cross a single street. Whether you’re a casual walker, runner, or cyclist, the Animas River Trail offers a scenic route for in-town adventures.

The northern terminus of the trail is at the intersection of 32nd Street and East 3rd Avenue, while the southern end lies at River Road, south of Escalante Drive. Access points are scattered along the river, including Santa Rita Park, Schneider Park, Memorial Park, Rotary Park, the Durango Rec Center, and several other locations (like the SpringHill Suites Durango, where we stayed).
