A mere 30 minutes drive from VaranasiĀ is the holy city of Sarnath, India. Sarnath is notable for being one of the most important locations for the Buddhist religion. It is the location (Deer Park) where the Buddha taught his first sermon after enlightenment, and the place where he met his disciples. This location is also one of the four places of pilgrimage that his followers believe one should visit.

Getting Around:

Sarnath is easily be visited ‘on your own’ as a 1/2 day trip, but I recommend spending at least a day so that you can take your time at the many ancient sites, museums, and temples. The best way to get there from Varanasi is by car or tuk tuk (in which case, you’ll want to wear a handkerchief to block the pollution – trust me).

What To See:

‘Must see’ things include theĀ Dhamekh Stupa, the Sarnath complex, Chaukhani Stupa, Deer Park, and the Archaeological Museum. The Thai Temple, Tibetan Temple, Japanese Temple, and Chinese Temple are also worth visiting, time permitting. I didn’t make it to the Golden Temple (passport required) but I’ve heard its also well worth a visit.

The Bottom-Line: Visiting Sarnath (Sarnath, India)

Sarnath is a perfect side trip from Varanasi, and is not to be missed. For Buddhists this is a holy place, and extra time may be required. The Sarnath complex is beautifully walkable, and is situated right near both Deer Park and the Archaeological Museum. Because of the site’s historical significances, extra security may be present at some of the sites. You may also be required to leave your belongings in a locker and/or you may be required to show your passport. Note that Sarnath, due to its geographic layout, is not particularly walkable in its entirety, so it’s best if you hire a tuk tuk to get you from place to place.

Cheers!
