About The Balcony House Loop Trail

The Balcony House Loop Trail, located in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, is a 0.4-mile loop trail that is popular for birding and hiking. It’s considered moderately challenging and offers a unique experience as it includes a ranger-guided tour through an ancient, but well-preserved, cliff dwelling. This tour is particularly infamous because it challenges visitors to descend a 100-foot staircase, climb a 32-foot double-ladder, crawl through a 12-foot by 18-inch wide tunnel (this was the worst part for me), and then climb an additional 60 feet of ladders and stone steps to exit the cliff dwelling.

Tickets are required for the ranger-led tour, which are typically available from late April to mid-October, and they go fast. Additionally, Mesa Verde National Park charges an entrance fee. The Balcony House itself is a medium-sized cliff dwelling with a total of 40 rooms. Its dramatic views, well-preserved structures, and exciting features make it one of the most popular and memorable sites in the park, although this trail might not be suitable for those with a fear of heights or small spaces. It is simply an amazing must-do experience Mesa Verde National Park.
